The Douglas DC-3 Dakota is a twin-engine propeller transport aircraft whose performance revolutionized air travel in the 1930s and 1940s. Because of its lasting impact on the aviation industry and World War II, it is considered one of the most important transport aircrafst ever produced.
It was developed as a larger, improved version with 14 sleeping berths from the Douglas DC-2 type. It is an all-metal, tail-wheel landing gear, powered by two Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp 1,200 hp (890 kW) radial engines. It has a cruise speed of 203 mph (333 km/h), a capacity of 21 to 32 passengers or 6,000 lb (2,700 kg) of cargo, a range of 1,400 miles (2,400 km), and the ability to operate from short runways.
Before the war, it was a pioneer on many routes because it was able to fly across the continental United States and proved that worldwide flights were possible; it also provided greater passenger comfort, it was reliable and easy to maintain. It is considered the first transport aircraft that could profitably carry only passengers. After the war, the aircraft market was flooded with surplus military transport aircraft and Douglas could not upgrade the DC-3 due to cost. On major routes, more advanced types like the Douglas DC-6 and Lockheed Constellation made it obsolete, but its design proved adaptable and useful.
Production of the civilian DC-3 ended in 1942 with 607 aircraft. Military versions, including the C-47 Skytrain, Soviet and Japanese versions, totaled more than 16,000 aircraft produced. Many are still in service in various specialized roles: an estimated 2,000 DC-3s and military derivatives were still flying in 2013.
