Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VC

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VC

Legendary aircraft of World War II

The Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the RAF and other Allied air forces during the World War II. Along with Hurricanes, the aircraft formed the basis of the British Royal Fighter Force during the Battle of Britain. Many variants of the Spitfire were produced, using several wing configurations, for example. And it was also produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft. It was also the only British fighter aircraft produced throughout the war and on into the 1950s. The Spitfire has remained popular between enthusiasts; nearly 60 remain airworthy and many more serve as static exhibits in aviation museums around the world.

During the Battle of Britain from July to October 1940, the public perceived the Spitfire as the RAF's main fighter aircraft, although the more numerous Hawker Hurricane bore the brunt of facing the German Luftwaffe. Units armed with Spitfires, however, had lower attrition rates and higher win-to-loss ratios than units flying Hurricanes, due to the Spitfire's superior performance. During the battle, Spitfires were generally tasked with intercepting Luftwaffe fighters - mainly Messerschmitt Bf 109E, which were very close to them.

Since the end of 1938, in the course of its production, 24 versions had been built and more than 20,000 had been produced. In 1944, the best version was deployed: the Spitfire Mk.XIV with the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. The Spitfire was one of the first aircrafts with retractable landing gear and had a naval version, the Seafire. The RAF's most successful fighter pilot in the Spitfire was J.E. Johnson, who single-handedly shot down 34 enemy aircraft, and collaboratively shot down 7 more.
