Piston engine - a reciprocating engine drives the propeller through a reduction drive. This type of propulsion is used for small sport or transport aircraft. It is advantageous due to its simplicity and reliability, as well as its low fuel consumption compared to combustion turbine based engines (turboprop, turbofan or jet). Due to the transmission of propulsion power via the propeller, piston engines are suitable for low flight speeds.
Turboprop - the turbine drives the propeller through a reduction drive. This type of engine is suitable for smaller aircraft, called commuters, (ATR, Dash 8) for regional and short-haul operations. Because of the transmission of propulsion power through the propeller (like piston engines), turboprop engines are suitable for low airspeeds. Compared to turbofan and jet engines, turboprop engines have better efficiency and therefore lower fuel consumption.
Turbocharger - used primarily in large transport aircraft or many military aircraft. It is suitable for high subsonic speeds.
Jet engine - the high gas pressure coming out of its exhaust is ideal for reaching supersonic speeds. An example of a jet-powered aircraft is the Concorde or many supersonic fighter aircraft.
Rocket engine - a rocket engine is advantageous for achieving the highest flight speeds. It is also advantageous for use at extreme flight altitudes where there might be insufficient atmospheric oxygen to run jet engines. On the other hand, the rocket engine has the lowest efficiency because, in addition to fuel, the aircraft must carry the oxidizer required for combustion. Propulsion of aircraft by rocket engine is not very common. It is usually used only for experimental aircraft or as a supplementary propulsion in combination with another of the above types of propulsion.
